n this so-so Sunday, with clouds always just about to break, seeing Tommaso Spennato suddenly crack a very satisfied smile was akin to witnessing sunshine in the middle of the night.

Disconcerting, to say the least – and even a little foreboding…

“I know I have won this eight times before,” says Tommaso, “but it still feels like the first time each and every time. It still feels amazing…”

It also feels like déjà vu squared, Caffe Delle Stelle now having won Greystones’ Best Coffee nine years in a row. Which makes us think it might be time to give Tommaso a lifetime achievement award, and push him out the door.

“I would be okay with that,” the man nods, “once everyone understood that the award was for all the years ahead. Forever and ever.

“Once my coffee is certified as the greatest to infinity, sure, someone else can win whatever year they like…”

Spoken like a true Italian.

So, we reckon for next year’s vote, it’ll be a Lifetime Achievement Award for The Bitter Lemon, leaving Greystones’ Best Coffee 2024 wide open for the other 3,278 java joints around here.
