or a minute there, we could have sworn we’d stepped through a portal to another Greystones.

There’s Caviston’s, just up from Camile, and Madison & Co.

And there’s McCauley’s on the corner, just a few doors down from Daata.

Like our beloved town reimagined in a Hopper painting, Glasthule feels sweetly familiar.

Especially when you’re sitting down to a meal prepared by a very familiar chef.

Having just opened in June, the third and biggest Daata outlet is being run by the mighty Rahat, her other half, Waseem, taking care of business back in sunny Greystones.

We reckon Bray probably just runs itself at this stage.

It’s a mighty leap forward, given that this fine building – previously home to Carluccio’s – boasts seating for 100 people.

And yet, thanks to its split levels and all its snugs and crannies, it feels intimate, almost small.

We opt for two lamb dishes (hey, a sheep looked at me funny once back on Blackberry Lane), and, bejiggers, they were beyond yummy. Like an ohm away from ohm, it’s a reminder that the woman who helped make Daata’s Bray and then Greystones outlets so successful is running the kitchen.  

Typically busy this evening, but we somehow managed to grab Rahat for a few words. First we ask her if Glasthule is a big leap forward for Daata, or just a natural progression…?
It’s a natural progression for us. We worked very hard as a family together to make sure Daata was as good as we could make it.

Has this latest adventure been a long time coming. Had you been considering taking a step-up to a 100-seat restaurant for a while…?
We had planned this long before the pandemic arrived, way back in early 2019, in fact. There were delays, but this was always something we wanted to do. It’s just wonderful to see it up and running after all this time, especially after the year that we’ve all had.

The year of living dangerously meant everyone turned to takeaways as their one big treat. Having to rely totally on that business all of a sudden, thrilling or chilling?
It was thrilling and chilling, and it was only through the support of our customers that we got through it. There was so much change when it came to the day-to-day running, and if the orders weren’t coming in, I’m not sure that we would have survived. So, we’re very, very grateful to all the wonderful people who would choose Daata for that special treat…

So far, so great reviews for Daata Glasthule. Has that given you a taste for expanding even further?
It’s been deeply encouraging to get such positive feedback, but we’re so keen to make sure that what we have already is as close to perfect as we can make it, each and every day. That’s how we’ve always approached Daata, and it means being involved every single day. So, we’re happy with what we’ve got, and with how much people seem to appreciate what we do…
