Delgany way back when…

Dublin film production company Standard Practice Productions has launched an Indiegogo Campaign to start the funding for the development of their period drama The Wicklow Gatehouse.
The story is a saga set in two time periods – modern day Ireland and the Ireland of 1913 before the Irish rose up against British rule. Loosely based on true stories, but with a mainly fictional basis, it chronicles the lives of an Irish family living in Wicklow through the 1916 Rising, WW1, The War of Independence and the Irish Civil War.
Screenwriter and producer Lucy Earley says: “I started looking into my genealogy shortly before the lockdowns and then got really into a deep dive from 2020. My great grandfather was a gardener for the gentry of Kindlestown House and moved there in the late 19th Century from Meath. So it
was retracing that family and their descendants that was really fascinating.
“I found out lots of information from cross checking irishgenealogy.ie off the census website, but a lot of the super interesting stuff was from trips to the National Library and looking through the papers of the time.
“That added to the fact that my paternal grandmother was 96 when she died and had a wealth of information about the family in Delgany that really hit home. It makes you think about the people before you. Essentially I did find out sad things, but The Wicklow Gatehouse is partially based on those stories but is mainly fictional – it’s really a saga of uplifiting love stories, revenge, betrayal, forgiveness and redemption interspersed with the history of the time paired with a story of their descendent – a young solicitor who finds out The Gatehouse has been featured, without her prior consent, on an abandoned house blog and something is found. So it goes from there.
“In 1913 Ireland had become very English, so it charts those changes. And they were huge in society and in families.”
