t was pretty obvious from day one who was going to win Greystones’ Yummiest Takeaway 2024…

The votes for one particular new kid in the town just kept on coming, each and every day.

Through the main site, texts, emails, and even an impassioned-quite-possibly-drunk shout across Marine Road down by The Cove.

Yep, sitting pretty down at The Boat Yard, Yellov has a huge amount of fans in this town. And deservedly so.

“I kept hearing from people that they had voted for me,” says founder Didem when we swung by this afternoon, “but I decided, best not to look, best not to mention it on our social media. If people like us, they’ll vote for us…”

And to think that this all started with an idea drawn on a napkin in The Beach House. Having worked in the kitchen of The Happy Pear for two years, Didem began to realise that her passion for food needed an outlet all of its own. And inspiration wasn’t hard to find, her father, Süleyman Köse, having run a tiny café alongside his wife, Dilek, in their native Istanbul for 15 years.

And the name of that tiny café was a simple misspelling of the word Yellow.

“So, naturally, I knew that my street food outlet had to be Yellov too,” smiles Didem. “Growing up in Istanbul, I was steeped in a rich food culture, and I wanted to capture the tastes and smells of those streets when it came to going out on my own.”

And so it is that Greystones was introduced to Turkish food, prepared from scratch, and ridiculously tasty.

Which may explain the 5-star review in The Irish Times in July. And why the groovy readers of The Greystones Guide voted in such numbers.

“Winning this award has made me so happy,” finishes Didem. “And the best part of it all will be showing it to my dad…”
