t’s the song competition that gave us the sweetest Swedes in the whole wide world, and now, the Eurovision might just springboard a young Greystones singer-songwriter into the toppermost of the poppermost.

Still reeling from the news, 12-year-old Ella Meakin Griffin only found out on Thursday about her chance of becoming the next ABBA.

Although, you know, she’d be more than happy to settle for becoming the next Ariana Grande.

The girl’s not selfish. That level of fame and fortune would suit her just fine.

Besides, Ariana Venti just doesn’t sound quite right.

In its 16th year, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Minsk on November 25th, and to get there, Ella will be taking part a five-week search on TG4, going up against 31 other young Irish singers aged between 9 and 14 years.

So, no pressure.

About to turn 13 next Tuesday, September 25th, Ella will spend the next few weeks rehearsing her as Gaeilge entry, Samhlaigh Liom, with her piano teacher and the song’s writer, Elaine Scott. Recorded at SL Studios in Gorey with the mighty Damian Brady at the controls, Ella’s song will be going before the TG4 cameras in October. We’ll let you know exactly when as soon as the timetable is announced. 

Having gotten through two taped and one live audition, Ella is feeling pretty darn confident about the possibility of representing Ireland at the Junior Eurovision 2018.

Then again, she might have gotten that cool from her mum, photographer and Greystones Player Sheena Griffin…
