Deputy Jennifer Whitmore recently met with the Ashford Irish Countrywomen’s Association to discuss her work as an environmentalist and parliamentarian advocating for climate action and biodiversity.

Deputy Whitmore says, “I was delighted to be asked to speak to this group of women in Ashford on range of issues in particular about the River Vartry and the East Wicklow Rivers Trust of which I am a founding member.

“It was a great opportunity to meet with a local group, and women in particular who play such an important role in their communities. As an environmentalist myself I was able to discuss how I started out in my current work and what drove me to campaign for climate action. It was also an important opportunity to discuss how we can meet the climate crisis on a local and national level and how communities can lead on this.

“The women were all very enthusiastic to engage on a range of issues. As an Association that works hard to foster networks with women across the county and country, it will be one of the many organisations that can play a positive role in pushing for prioritising climate action as we enter a more intense period to meet our climate action goals.

“I look forward to seeing the work carried out by the Association in future and important areas like the Vartry River prioritised as we look to better preserve our environment in Wicklow,” concludes Whitmore.
