Engaging in the planning process would have allowed public

Not in my Burnaby yard…

Not in my Burnaby yard…
he Burnaby Residents Association are clearly not happy with
some of the changes made at the town’s central park.
At a cost of €145,000. VAT included.
Whether or not: “a) The removal of a grass area of the park (c.243sqm) and the installation of a new playing area with hardcore surface, b) The installation of a series of concrete plinths in previously green areas throughout the park; c) The fixing of new furniture on these concrete plinths, including benches, and chess tables; and d) The installation of a new signage board directly adjacent to the new playing
area” is or is not development and is or is not exempted development.
Burnaby Park is a much loved and much used amenity for all residents of Greystones and visitors to the town.
This was not about whether a Boules Court was a good idea or not, but rather whether before committing public funds to such a project and fundamentally changing the appearance and use of a key part of the Park, WCC should have engaged with the wider community and sought full public participation.
The first thing most people knew about this work was when the JCB arrived to remove the grass area from the Park.
participation and involvement on the design and use of the park and that can only be a good thing.
We now hope that WCC will move to rectify the planning status of the works that they have carried out in the Park and engage with the public before any future works.

I have to say that the park is looking much much better than it did even 3 or 4 years ago. All the improvements are very welcome in my view. Planning issues aside, if the WCC / others need to consult with locals on every change, then nothing will ever get done. It’s not like they bulldozed the park. It is much better and cleaner than it used to be.
I sat and had lunch in the park several times this week. It was quietly busy with some of the new people and their new sprogs enjoying the amenities. I thought for the first time in a long time, this place is starting to feel a bit like the community it once was. Burnaby Park has long been an abandoned dumbing ground where junkie detritus could be found scattered about. Greystones has no other green space to speak of. every patch of green is being built on or shat on (by new dogs). I think these new improvements have made a wonderful modern amenity for the community to enjoy.
You can only dig up the park for a bowls club don’t you know.
Why the objection? At 13.15 today,Thursday,9 benches were occupied. The main large green not affected.
