he eagle-eyed GG reader who got in touch this morning was naturally more than a little concerned to see slot machines and Russian roulette tables being delivered to Sweeney’s down at the harbour this afternoon.

This was the scene, after all, of a year-long casino battle royale that had seemingly knocked on the head any kind of gambling being allowed at Joe’s old chipper and one-time amusement hall.

Mainly because the kind of gambling planned was a little more professional than any seaside amusement distraction.

Swinging by, the lads with the DHL moving van said it was all just storage. A quick visit to the front-of-house – where a large cargo container awaits a long-gestating café renovation – and manager Paul Hayden’s son assures us that, yep, it’s just storage.

And then, making contact with the bould Haydo himself, he was quick to confirm that it was definitely all only storage – “It’s not our stuff, in any way, shape or form“. These gambling goodies belonging to a place in Dun Laoghaire that’s currently being renovated, Paul says.

So, a premises that caused uproar upon revealing its casino plans is, one year later, storing casino games for another premises. What are the odds…?
