Can Greystones Think Outside The Coffee Shop?

here’s little doubt that the renovation and redevelopment of the run-down Helena Cottage and its equally ancient neighbour Mentone is going to be a major plus for Greystones.

With plans to maintain the beauty of these historical buildings firmly in place, there’s really just one question that we’re dying to know the answer to.

When it comes to the three commercial units out front, will someone be serving up something other than coffee?

We covered this development back in September 2019, when the former homes went on the market for a tidy €1.5m, and again in November 2021, when planning was approved for 8 apartments plus those all-important commercial units.

Thanks to that Bezos swine, there are only a handful of goods left that you can’t get online, such as some freshly-baked cakes, a mug of freshly-brewed coffee, a snazzy haircut or, for the vain and the veiny, a little hands-on physical toning and fine tuning.

Luckily, there are enough smart people in this town who know that, when it comes to the likes of clothes, antiques, ornaments and books, tactile wins over technology every time. Some things you really need to see up close, in the real world.

And that same-second delivery is pretty wonderful too.

So, with the fancy-pants hoarding now in place, we’ll be watching the last part of the Church Road jigsaw take shape over the coming months.

And we’ll be waiting and hoping that it’s going to bring something shiny and new to the town.
