Developer Takes Delgany To Church

Delgany Community Council is delighted to welcome recent engagement with representatives of Lowick Homes regarding benefits for the community on the former Carmelite site in Delgany.

Both parties met recently on two occasions and are working towards a detailed agreement which will outline works to be done on the site to provide the local community with some badly needed facilities.

As per the original grant of planning permission, the former church will become a community centre. The necessary works will be done by Lowick Homes to upgrade it to ensure that it is fully accessible, functional and energy efficient before it is handed over to the community.

Another aspect of the collaboration will see the expansion of the playground to include additional pieces of play equipment. This will be a great facility for young families in the village.

Delgany Community Council initiated a Public Realm study in 2022 with funding provided by the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Government of Ireland’s Town and Village Renewal Scheme (TVRS) 2020. The plan was shaped through a highly collaborative and inclusive process, involving residents, school children, business owners, as well as the elected members and officials of Wicklow County Council.

Professional support was provided by The Paul Hogarth Company Landscape Architects and Urban Designers. The plan was published in March 2023 and it highlights the unique opportunity for Delgany to collaborate with developers and the community to enhance and create public spaces and destinations. The study is available here. This collaboration is a perfect example of that strategy coming to life.

“We are grateful to Lowick Homes for their collaboration on this exciting phase in the future of Delgany village. We look forward to seeing the plans become a reality. A Wicklow County Council audit of Community and Recreational facilities in the Greystones Municipal District highlighted the lack of such facilities in Delgany. The audit was conducted in 2021 and showed that while Delgany had 20% of the population of the area it had just 3% of the facilities. The population of the village has increased significantly since 2021 but we still do not have a Community Centre in Delgany.

We believe that the benefits to the community arising from this development will help to create a vibrant heart for our village. “

WCC also recently announced works for Delgany Village’s Chapel Road which will see upgraded footpaths, the addition of cycle track facilities and enhancements for vehicular traffic, which will involve the realignment and widening of Chapel Road which will also contribute to Delgany’s infrastructure.

Delgany Community Council is composed of local representation from Delgany residents, Delgany Tidy Towns, and the Delgany Village businesses who work on a volunteer basis to benefit the local community, and will be organising as a formal legal entity to transition the ownership and oversight of this priceless community asset.
