he fact that a meeting about the recent crime surge in Delgany and the surrounding area had to be held in secret reflects the genuine fear that’s in the air right now.

Fear of retaliation, of course, from those who seem to be conducting their break-ins, robberies and face-to-face threats with impunity.

Alongside the battle-cry of standing together against this growing problem in the community, the organisers are calling on anyone affected by this unfortunate situation to let not only the gardaí know but, perhaps even more importantly, Wicklow County Council too.

Should you fear reprisals for speaking out, you can request to remain anonymous. What matters here is the community being heard, and the crimes themselves being recorded. According to Cllr Jennifer Whitmore, in a conversation this week with Wicklow County Council’s housing department, they haven’t received any complaints yet about the recent crimes in the area. Which is hard to believe.

There is a danger too in singling out any particular suspects publicly, as this can be held up as discrimination in court. Something we’ve got to watch out for here at GG, of course, as does anyone using social media, for example.
