Elderly Social Housing At Carraig Eden

t’s possibly the sweetest location in town, and now, 14 one-bed apartments for older people are set for the Carraig Eden site.

The inclusion of social housing was part of the requirement when Wicklow County Council bought the much-loved building for the recovery charity Tiglin in 2017.

The council’s senior engineer Helena Fallon stated, “It’s such a great site, people may be encouraged to give up their three-bed social houses.”

The 14 apartments will be in a three-storey building, which Ms Fallon assured local councillors is the same height as other houses in the locality. The plans would see Rise At The Cove remain as a neighbouring café, whilst the development will include amenity space.

There were eight objections to the proposed development, most concerned about the risk of flooding, the loss of privacy to neighbouring properties, the impact on biodiversity in the area and increased traffic volumes.

Still at the planning and design stage but getting the thumbs up front this month from local councillors, all the apartments will have balconies and face out to sea, whilst WCC hopes Tiglin would be the approved housing body looking after the scheme, given that they are already operating the centre which is on the grounds.

Wicklow County Council will manage the allocation of the apartments, which will be reserved for people over 55.
