On Saturday May 23rd, the Greystones community held a silent, peaceful vigil, in a continuous show of support in solidarity with Palestine.
The event called for the full enactment of the Occupied Territories Bill, and it
began at 7.30pm at Burnaby Park and continued down to the Cove, with community members walking in silent strength, carrying flowers and candles.
Greystones for Palestine co-founder and organiser Fionna Saintraint said “It’s important to keep showing up. There’s a reason that protests are supressed, the flotillas are stopped, and loud voices are silenced: brute force on its own is insufficient. It requires mass compliance to be legitimised.
“That’s why we need to keep showing up. That’s why our government’s lack of action is so disappointing. What is the point of having been against the genocide once the genocide is over? Bravery demands that we act now, while there is still someone to save. Otherwise, it is just empty morals used to encourage people to forget that we are a nation run by cowards. And I believe that, as a people who still wear the scars of our violent imperial oppression, passed down to us by our grandparents, we should demand better for ourselves.”
Councillor Mark Barry, who also spoke at the vigil, stated, “Our silence tonight provides a space for the sorrow we feel in the face of the horrors that the Palestinian people endure, and our loss of words in the face of our leaders’ lack of substantial action to put Ireland on the right side of history.
“We demand that our government shows courage and
fully enacts the Occupied Territories Bill. Partial measures are not enough. We need leadership that stands up for what is right.”
Organisers reminded vigil goers that Greystones for Palestine gathers every Wednesday and Friday morning at 7.30am at Burnaby Park for a 30-minute community gathering. All are welcome to join these peaceful meet-ups.
Each participant tonight added to the growing wave of pressure on the government, showing that the community’s voice is unwavering.
In tandem with the vigil, Greystones for Palestine has also opened a fundraiser in support of Gaza Go Bragh.
