he recent call by local artists for a Greystones arts centre certainly resonated last night at the launch of Kaisa Ypya’s latest exhibition at Signal Arts Centre last night.

Here was a community space where art lovers and launch liggers could come together and discuss, dissect and digest a whole new batch of creations.

The fact that everyone could also drink and be merry for nada no doubt helped the conversation and consideration flow too.

It was, in other words, just the sort of evening Greystones could do with on a regular basis – especially given that we seem to have more artists per square circle than any other town on Planet Éire.

We’ve officially got the most self-published writers, but that may have more to do with ego than ability.

The communal feeling at Bray’s Signal Arts Centre last night made for a wonderful evening, aided and abetted in no small measure by the mischievous masters of ceremony, Don Rorke and Donal Smyth, along with barman supreme, Tom.

And the presence of delovely Anna O’Rourke from The Boat Yard Gallery at Greystones harbour – where the outdoor summer exhibitions will soon return – was a reminder that, hey, it can be done. And it can be fun.

So, here’s hoping something similar will soon open its doors in Greystones, a soul kitchen for all of the town’s talented wallflowers. Where they can admire and devour someone else’s wall flowers…
