In line with the Harbour Bye-laws, the owner of these two fishing vessels are required to provide details of arrival and departure times to the Harbour Master, to allow for the breakwater to be cleared of the public and the gates to the breakwater to be locked.

ocal fisherman Ivan Toole knew last week’s High Court victory reinstating
the cleats needed to land their catch wasn’t the end.
There are many court cases to come as he battles with Sisk, BJ Marina and Wicklow County Council over not having official access to the new marina since the harbour was closed for redevelopment in 2008.
The protests, arguments and counter-arguments have raged pretty much ever since, and last week’s court victory was just a small step in finally settling this long-running dispute that clearly still has some rage in its sails.
So, Ivan says he wasn’t all that surprised to find that he and the other fishermen were blocked this afternoon from entering the marina pier to unload their catch.
We checked with Tom Byrne at Sisk as to just why the gates were closed, and he directed us to the updated FAQ on the Greystones Harbour website, and, specifically, its first entry. Which reads…
Following a temporary Court Order allowing two fishing vessels (MFV Dignity and MFV Blue Fin) to berth and unload catch and gear from the North Breakwater, we have had a risk assessment carried out, to ensure people using the pier are not exposed to undue risk.

Having watched the large brown truck go down the breakwater many times I have to admit that I was worried. For me it’s not the unloading activity it’s the movement of the larger truck down the breakwater. I have to agree with the safety assessment. Some controls are required to minimise the risk,
Re Fishermen and access to harbour. The reasons put forward for closing North Breakwater are self-serving and nonsensical. I doubt any other harbour where fishermen operate close to the public. The public have commonsense, they know not to get in the way of the fishermen when they ate unloading. It is a very small section of the breakwater and most people don’t walk there.. In Wicklow,Wexfoed Waterford,Dun Laoghaire, Hoath the public in not denied access. Are they going to close the boardwalk every time a courier is making a delivery? Perhaps they would like to put their assessment in the public domain.
