aking the place of their annual carol service, in 2021 the Temple Carrig School grounds were alive with the flicker of a seemingly endless path of candles.

Oh, and the bleating of a few slightly worried sheep, not too crazy about the barbecue potential all around them after 1,000 students finished their long festive hike.

Around 450 people turned up for that inaugural Candlelit Christmas Walk through, up and around the Blacklion school, and it proved to be pretty much the perfect way to launch the festive season.

And last year, all three of Greystones secondary schools became part of the festive celebration, with St David’s and Greystones Community School jumping on board.

Largely the work of the school’s chaplaincy and music departments, there were plenty of staff and students behind the scenes who make such a night happen. And it was young O’Connor, the school’s agricultural science teacher, who provided the woolly little helpers in 2021, chief among them Tony The Pet Sheep, who mingled with his adoring fans into the wee-wee hours. Hopefully, our woolly buddies will be attending again on Thursday, December 21st. Kick-off is 7.30pm.

Alan Cox, Temple Carrig’s principal, is inviting everyone along to this year’s Carols By Candlelight. “It was a wonderful night last year, and such a gathering is really what Christmas is all about…”
