Greystones Filmmaker Gets €20,000 Bursary

The artist as a young man…

e might just be the hardest working man in experimental film, and now, all those years of producing acclaimed short after acclaimed short has begun to pay off for talented young Greystones filmmaker Dean Kavanagh.

With his works having played everywhere from Spectacle Theatre in New York to the Philippines Film Institute, the Blacklion Buñuel has just been awarded a bursary by the Arts Council.

As part of their Next Generation programme – which recognises and promotes artists from a varied selection of genres – Kavanagh and his current collaborator, Anja Mahler, have been awarded €20,000.

Which is pretty darn sweet.

Awarded a BA in Media Arts back in 2011, the Greystones filmmaker has firmly established himself in the industry, whilst his collaborative work with visual artist Mahler for the last three years has seen the duo explore the passage and manipulation of time through the expressive use of moving image technology and the human body.

We think that means Dean films Anja dancing. But, we could be wrong. Very wrong.
