Greystones Gets On Its Moby Bike

Greystones Cathaoirleach Councillor Lourda Scott has welcomed the strong uptake of the Moby e-bike sharing scheme in Greystones, a project she first proposed in 2023.

Recent figures show that, after a shaky start due to an app hack, users in Greystones have cycled over 18,000 kilometres, with more than 12,000 trips recorded. In February alone, there were 567 trips covering over 840 kilometres, despite poor weather conditions, proving to be a positive step in active transport options for the local community

Speaking about the scheme Cllr Scott said: “When I first proposed these I hoped that they would be a welcome addition to the area and I am delighted that this is the case. I am very encouraged by the number of trips in Greystones and Delgany. Over 18,000 kilometres cycled in the last year is huge. But what stands out is the consistent use. Even during a very wet February, there were over 500 trips. That shows that renting an e bikes is becoming part of daily life in the town.”

The scheme is now set to expand, with additional bikes planned for Greystones and a rollout to Kilcoole as part of the next phase. A new operator will take over at the end of April, bringing increased capacity across the county.

Cllr Scott added: “When I first brought this forward, the aim was to give people a practical alternative for short journeys, particularly in our hilly area and with all the traffic congestion we have. The uptake shows that people are willing to leave the car behind when the alternative is readily available and easy to use.

“It’s also important to seeing progress towards a more visible cycling culture. There has been significant investment by the NTA in improving cycle infrastructure, which helps, however there is still room for improvement.”

The scheme forms part of a wider shift towards shared transport. The Department is also progressing plans for mobility hubs, which will bring together e-bikes, e-scooters and other shared transport options in accessible locations.

“Our neighbours in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown are shortly rolling out a pilot mobility hub. These hubs will support more connected and flexible travel choices for residents and crucially will be subsidised making it a cheaper option than filling the car.

“I will continue to push for Wicklow to be included in the next phase so that communities in Greystones and North Wicklow have access to modern, joined up transport options that meet the needs of our rapidly growing population.”
