Greystones Students Try Some Trilateral Thinking

Social Democrats TD for Wicklow, Jennifer Whitmore, has praised students from the three post-primary schools in Greystones, Temple Carrig School, St David’s Secondary School, and Greystones Community College following their joint trilateral congress held this week.

Deputy Whitmore participated in a student-led Q&A session organised by the Greystones Trilateral Student Council, where young people discussed key local issues and the role of youth engagement in politics and community life.

“It was fantastic to see the three schools coming together in such a meaningful way,” Deputy Whitmore said. “The students were incredibly impressive. They were well-informed, articulate, and clearly very politically engaged. Young people are often left behind when decisions are being made, but events like this show just how important their voices are.”

During the discussion, students raised several local concerns, including public transport, particularly the reliability of bus services to Roundwood, as well as the ongoing shortage of special education places and broader pressures on school capacity across the county.

“These students really have their finger on the pulse in terms of what is happening in the county. They highlighted issues that affect their daily lives, from the need for better transport links to the serious challenges families face in accessing special education places.

“These are issues I am already working on, and it’s invaluable to hear directly from young people about their experiences,” Deputy Whitmore continued.

Deputy Whitmore commended the organisers, including the student council representatives, for creating a space where young people could meaningfully engage with politics and local decision-making.

“Seeing young people engage so confidently with the political system gives me huge hope,” concluded Whitmore.

“Their insight and energy are exactly what our communities need, and I look forward to continuing to support them in making their voices heard.”
