It was, of course, the recent Guide cover story that inspired the Greystones U14 Girls to new heights this evening, as they faced their longtime arch rivals, Cabinteely.
With each team leapfrogging the other over the season, tonight’s match was always going to be a little special.
Just how special became apparent very early on, as Greystones seemed to turn the heat up to 11, the two teams battling for that winning goal throughout every second of the 90 minutes.
You could tell there was a lot riding on this game.
In the end, it was a close call, with Cabinteely hitting the bar twice, but, in the end, Greystones won, 3-2, thanks to Caoimhe Swan’s double and Emily Gaines’ crucial decider. Making them – drum roll, please – the Metropolitan Girls 14A League Champions.
If you hurry, you can still catch the team tonight and wish them congrats. They’re in Robinson’s.
The Greystones Girls U13s play Dunboyne at home Thursday at 7.45pm, and if any girls would like to find out just how rocking Greystones United are, there’s an Open Day this Saturday, at 2pm.
