ormally, when it comes to taking photographs for GG, the main issue is the lighting…

And, of course, those sudden bursts of rain.

With Susan Collins, trying to get some quick cover shots outside her Home Of Hair on Church Road was tricky for one simple reason – everyone and her brother kept stopping for a quick hello, or to give a wave from across the street.

“That’s the great thing about Greystones,” says Collins, “people say hello, people check in on one other. Around here, people care about each other…”

They also care about the planet, deeply, with more eco warriors and vegan vigilantes to the square organic mile in Greystones than any other town in Ireland. Maybe it was The Happy Pear who triggered it all, or maybe it was just all the 1960s generation coming home to roost through their slightly less stoned and more actually-made-it-to-the-protest prone offspring.

Whatever the reason, the greenest town in the greenest county of the greenest country is now firmly committed to being even greener.

To this end, Susan Collins has set herself the mission of making her Home Of Hair “as sustainable as can be”. Which means making sure all the products they use are bio-degradable, carbon-neutral and recycled.

It also means eliminating all single-use plastic. And more significantly for Home Of Hair, it means making the leap to Davines, the family-owned Italian manufacturer of high-end hair care products that all achieve the B Corporation certificate.

And what the hell is the B Corporation certificate when it’s at home? Well, it’s a cert for those businesses that meet ‘high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials’. In short, when you do your best for your employees, your product and the world around you, you get a B Corp stamp of approval. And that’s something that Susan Collins is hoping to achieve at Home Of Hair, which would make her only the 14th such business in Ireland, and the 1st hair salon.
