This week is Science Week and Minister Harris as Minister for Science has launched the Little Book of Irish Research in Wicklow Schools.

Minister Harris visited St Brigid’s National School and St Laurence’s National School in Greystones.

Speaking today Minister Harris said “Science Week is always a very exciting time for people of all ages but especially young children who are beginning to get curious about the world that surrounds them.

“I am delighted to be here in two schools in Greystones to celebrate Science Week as the Minister for Science. To mark this week I am launching The Little Book of Irish Research in these two schools but all schools will have access to this little book.

“Last year I asked Irish people what their priorities were in the area of research and science.

“This little book tries to capture those priorities and tells us what we are doing in the area of research and science to tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow.

“Our young people are very concerned about climate change and this is reflected in this book. Some children wanted us to examine how to protect bees from extinction and the book tells us a little bit about what it takes for bees to survive and what we need to do to protect them.

Minister Harris concluded “Today is about including everyone is Science Week but particularly young children who are passionate about science and how it impacts their everyday lives.”

The Little Book of Irish Research, launched as part of Science Week, has its origins in the Government’s Creating Our Future’ initiative.

In 2021, the general public was asked what researchers in Ireland should explore to create a better future.

Following over 18,000 submissions from people all over Ireland, the Creating Our Future Committee identified 16 main themes.

The Little Book of Irish Research captures some of the latest, fascinating Irish research activities aligned with these themes.
