Hungry Like The Wolf

Having once roamed all over Ireland, the wolf is being reintroduced to Ireland – and Wicklow is where the pilot scheme will begin.

With the last known wolf in Ireland having been shot in County Carlow back in 1786, H.O.W.L. (the Hibernian Organisation of Wolves in the Landscape) propose a small scale reintroduction of wolves, with the pilot programme taking place in Wicklow National Park.

It’s believed that the presence of wolves will improve the natural ecosystem, increase the value of the local economy through additional tourism, and enhance the wildlife experience of the hugely popular Wicklow Way trail.

There is also the benefit, it’s claimed, of introducing natural control of deer numbers – which is close to carrying capacity. The problem being, the deers have overgrazed plant life and also compete with sheep.
