slightly different kind of club has come to Greystones with the establishment of a Death Café gathering every month or so.

Growing in popularity around the world, the idea behind a Death Café is a chance for people to talk about the end, so that you might just appreciate the beauty of living that little bit more.

Says organiser Ana, “They are gatherings of strangers who meet to talk about death over tea, coffee and cake. Their objective is to encourage people to break the death taboo and contemplate their mortality as a way to connect with what really matters to them and make the most of their lives.”

With over 18,000 such shindigs having happened around the world, the principles and ground rules are…

⦿ It is a non for profit event
⦿ There is no fixed agenda
⦿ It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session
⦿ We have no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action.
⦿ We’ll have some tea/coffee and cake. That’s a big part of the event!

And just to make the Greystones gatherings that little bit more interesting, there’s also a Death Book Club being set up, with Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine And What Matters In The End by Atul Gawande the first tome chosen. This literary love-in will take place monthly on a Sunday afternoon.
