Having got to a point in his life where a fine bit of stonework can really get his mojo working, Maurice was

onto GG this morning, having reckoned that there was a sweet story here.
hugely impressed by the work being done on the new Chapel Road wall by two hardy and plainly skilled men.
So, when we swung by this afternoon, we fully expected to hear distant uileann pipes playing in the wind as the two hardy men in question, Raymond and Emlyn, weaved a tale or two about the mystic origins of this ancient craft, the particular stone and method chosen for Chapel Road, and the Wall Around Damascus moment that set them on this noble path.
Instead, we encountered two Donegal lads just getting on with the job in hand, whilst occasionally taking the Michael out of one another.

That is quality workmanship alright. What makes one stone wall better than another? For one thing it needs to have “courses”. You should be able to see a series of horizontal joint lines at intervals between the courses. A lot of the more modern walls being built (along the N11 or the Bray flood relief works) are done in a random pattern more like “crazy paving” or a vertically oriented jigsaw.
