Best Christmas gifts ever… Katie with grandmother Kathleen Cranley

he was known simply as The Legend of Wolfe Tone, but for Katie Taylor, Kathleen Cranley was simply her nan.

And tomorrow, in her 94th year, Kathleen will be laid to rest after an 11am service in Colliers Funeral Home.

Posting on her social media, the Bray boxer paid tribute to her beloved grandmother following her passing on Saturday, calling her ‘remarkable’, and ‘One of the most inspiring human beings you’ll ever meet‘.

Kathleen was also grandmother to another boxer, Jake McMahon, who paid tribute by calling her ‘a warrior‘, his ‘role model, my nanny and, most of all, my best friend‘.

Beyond well known in Bray’s Wolfe Tone, amongst the many tributes from Kathleen’s neighbours, that one word that recurred again and again was, of course, ‘legend’.

Wrote Katie, ‘She’s seen it all and been through it all, endured so much hardship but remained so pure in spirit. She brought us so much joy with the best sense of humour. What a legacy!

“Thanks for everything, Nanny. You’ll be missed beyond words. Honouring a life well lived. You are simply the best. Until we meet again.”
