t won’t come as much of a surprise to her Bray neighbours, but Katie Taylor made a spectacular comeback last night at Dublin’s 3Arena.

Having suffered her first professional defeat at the gloves of Chantelle Cameron back in May, there was a lot riding on the biggest fight of the season.

And with revenge – and what she herself called “a resurrection” – driving her forward, Taylor put on a spirited display, boxing above her normal 135lbs and finishing the match with a majority win.

One judge did score the ferocious fight a draw 95-95 but the others went with 98-92 and 96-94 to give Taylor world titles at two weights, making the Bray pugilist the undisputed world super lightweight champion in the process.

It was all a bit Rocky 2.

Like that May meeting, it was a bloody and close-fought fight, with Chantelle spending much of the 10 rounds with blood streaming down her face.

When she was announced as the winner, Taylor told the cheering crowd, “Don’t ever doubt me” – and we can’t imagine that anyone would ever dare.

For his part, promoter Eddie Hearn pronounced, “Croke Park must happen.“

To that end, Hearn has spoken of setting up a third bout between Taylor and Cameron, completing what he has already dubbed The Trilogy.
