Lifeguard At The Cove A No-Go

he petition to have a lifeguard at The Cove may have gotten a whole lot of signatures around here…

But that doesn’t mean the popular Greystones swimming hole is going to get one.

Town engineer Ruairi O’Hanlon has stated that the budget just isn’t there for such an addition to the town.

Speaking at a recent Greystones Municipal District Council meeting, O’Hanlon was answering a query from Cllr Mags Crean about the likelihood that The Cove would get its lifeguard once designated a bathing area.

He stated that the allocation of lifeguards to public bathing spots is managed by the environmental section of Wicklow County Council, and they tended to favour blue flag beaches for such assignments.

It’s a long road to being declared a designated bathing area, with four years water quality testing before any such designation can be made. Something that wasn’t revealed to the local councillors until late in the game.

Since then, submissions have been made, petitions have been filed, and we’ve been banging on about the bloody thing for years.

So, here’s hoping Wicklow County Council can find some moolah down behind the back of the sofa one of these fine summer days…
