fun night out in Greystones for one local woman quickly turned into a nightmare as she and her friends began walking home.
They had already noticed a man taking photos as they passed, but it was when they began walking up Killincarrig Road that the night turned nasty.
After 21-year-old Christian O’Brien shouted “Catch this!”, the woman in question turned only to have a whiskey glass strike her in the face.
A group of people then chased O’Brien down, holding onto him until the gardaĂ arrived and arrested him.
Questioning had to be deferred until the following morning due to his state of intoxication.
The incident happened on May 27th, 2021, and this week, Christian O’Brien was jailed for 12 months for the assault on the 39-year-old mother of one.
Of no fixed abode but originally from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, O’Brien has 81 previous convictions, including five for assault and 26 for public order offences. At the time of the Greystones assault, he was on bail, after being charged with a burglary in Nenagh.
In a victim impact statement, the woman – who received a cut above her right eye that required five stitches and will leave a permanent scar – revealed that she was off sick from work for seven weeks and that she no longer felt safe, “even during the day”, and also suffered panic attacks and depression.
Counsel for O’Brien, Éamonn O’Moore BL, stated that his client had spent a period of his childhood in care and had an addiction to alcohol and drugs.
O’Brien had also recently completed a Gaisce award while in prison and is due to meet President Michael D Higgins next week.
