May The Farce Be With You

ollowing Cllr Tom Fortune’s call out of perceived local government failings last week, an online discussion has been organised.

Organised with fellow independent councillor Mags Crean, the two Greystones Municipal District politicians are hosting Local Government: Force Or Farce? on April 22nd.

With Professor Mary Murphy their guest speaker, the thrust of the discussion will focus on how to fix a seemingly broken system, and how local government could best work for the people it serves.

Here’s the lowdown…

Local Government is a force for good when local communities and citizens have strong democratically elected representatives protecting the provision of local services and calling for enhanced local democracy. Or is it slowly becoming a farce with a rotating political cast who have decreasing powers and functions?

Join an online event on Thursday 22nd April with Independent Councillors, Mags Crean and Tom Fortune, and keynote speaker Professor Mary Murphy to hear more about the decline of local democracy in Ireland and what can be done to fix it.

Learn more about how vital local services have been privatised and centralised; how bureaucratic power has increased at the expense of political representatives; and how local government has not recovered from the impact of austerity policies that cut funding, staff and reduced the overall number of councils and public representatives.
