Music Sounds Better With Niwel

t’s pretty much impossible to keep up with the musical journey of Greystones musician Niwel Tsumbu.

Arriving in Ireland from the Congo back in 2004, Tsumbu has played alongside everyone from Liam O’Maonlai and Baaba Maal to Steve Reich, Roger Doyle and Donal Dineen.

Over that time, the albums just kept on coming, from solo outings to numerous duos and trios and, most recently, the world fusion five-piece band RiZA.

Covering every style from jazz, rhumba, flamenco, rock, soukous, classical and whatever-you’re-having-yourself, Niwel’s taste – and talent – knows no bounds.

Which will become abundantly clear to anyone who’s at The Hot Spot on Friday, February 2nd, when Niwel and longtime friend and collaboration Éamonn Cagney stop off on their 2018 European tour.

We caught up with Niwel earlier today to find out where all this music came from, as we talked about inspirations, all those collaborations, and the hidden depths of Daniel O’Donnell’s troubled soul…
