Social Democrats Councillor for Greystones District, Jodie Neary, has resigned her seat on Wicklow County Council to take up a new role in the renewable energy sector.

Commenting on her resignation, Jodie said: “After twelve years working in politics, two and a half of which I spent as a councillor for Greystones District, I have regretfully come to the decision that it is time to step down. Throughout my career in politics, I have particularly focused on climate change issues and when a new employment opportunity arose in that sector I felt compelled to take it.

“I am pleased that I now have an opportunity to work directly in the renewable energy industry – helping to deliver Ireland’s climate change obligations. However, it is a bittersweet time for me as this change of career will necessitate leaving my seat on Wicklow County Council.

“It has been a real privilege to be a local representativeand help advocate for constituents in the Greystones District. I got to know so many incredible local people campaigning for better community services and a stronger response to climate change. The people of Greystones are extremely engaged in local politics and I have really enjoyed working with them to better our local community.

“Despite resigning my seat, I will remain a member of the Social Democrats and look forward to continuing working with the party in a personal capacity. In the meantime, the local Social Democrats’ branch is working on a replacement for my seat, which it hopes to fill as soon as possible.

“I want to thank all my councillor colleagues in Greystones Municipal District and my colleagues across Wicklow County Council and wish them all the best in their work. I would also like to thank the officials and staff in Wicklow County Council, and in the Greystones Municipal District, who have been so supportive of me as a councillor.

“Finally, I would like to thank all the constituents of Greystones District, community groups and individuals who have supported my work and who work tirelessly for the benefit of the community. I will never forget the incredible years I’ve spent representing such a vibrant, special community in Wicklow.

Commenting on Jodie’s resignation, Social Democrats Wexford TD Jennifer Whitmore said: “Jodie has been a fantastic councillor and a tireless worker for the Greystones District. Jodie also worked for me in Leinster House, and provided invaluable support in her role as my parliamentary assistant. As such, the resignation is a double blow for me and I am very sorry that she is standing down.

“However, I know Jodie will excel in her new career in an area that is very important to her, and to me: the renewable energy sector.”
