his year’s search for the best 99 in town was a two-horse race pretty much from the start.

Which surprised us, given that every Tom, Pat and Saffron is selling ice-cream around here these days.

From those clever kids at Rise to Sweeney’s fancy-pants new dock, sure don’t we have the perfect long, very hot summer for 99s? 

Despite all that competition, Nigel and the Spendlove’s gang loyal followers were voting daily, but never too far behind once the race got started was AnniePooh, and her dairy-free, vegan ice cream fit for a Rock God.

Which was just tailor-made for Greystones.

Sadly, AnniePooh’s little Hillside shop is no more, and her shiny new ice cream machine is actually on the market. In the end, Spendlove’s won it by a clear flake. Or two.

Just like last year.

The 2021 win

“Everyone here is going to be chuffed,” said Nigel when we presented him with his framed award this afternoon, Paddy Holohan from sponsors Daly’s SuperValu in tow. “We were so pumped to win last year, we were worried people might think we’d already had our moment in the sun.

“So, to win Greystones Best 99 again, that just makes us realise that we’re definitely doing something right here.”
