Let The Sunflowers In

here seems to be a sunflower love-in just about every other week every August.

The Tyners

Most famous, perhaps, is the Tyner family down at Minmore Farm in Shillelagh, whilst the Furlong family has August sewn up.

Well, now there are two Wicklow farms all set to bloom in aid of Wicklow Hospice.

Three acres of sunflowers have been planted and are due to be smiling wide from the start of August for two or three weeks – the Scalp Wood Nurseries in Kilternan and Charles Tottenham’s farm near Ballinahinch in Ashford.

Scalp Wood will be open seven days a week from August 2nd to the 11th whilst Tottenham’s will be from August 8th till the 21st, both 10am to 5pm (weather permitting, of course), and you don’t need to book.

Visitors are welcome take photos in the field and if you would like to take some sunflowers home should bring a cutting implement along. There are no set charges but visitors are kindly asked to donate to Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services using cash or by tapping that plastic, baby.

Just don’t forget these are open fields – so, no stilettos. Or dogs, as it turns out.  Also, there’s limited parking at both sites but no toilet facilities or refreshments. So, bring sandwiches, pop and a bucket.
