Our Derry Girls Are Foyle Cup Champs

Their cup floweth over…

t’s regarded as the country’s flagship tournament for youth soccer, and this year’s O’Neills Foyle Cup championship turned out to be a very memorable one for some of our talented young players.

Beating 30 teams over this 3-day tournament, the Greystones United U13s girls team have just been crowned Foyle Cup champions.

Which is pretty darn amazing. And more than a little spectacular.

Here’s the lowdown of the tournament from ace match reporter Janet O’Beirne…

Day 1 kicked off and the girls recorded brilliant results . 

Greystones 5 Finn Valley 0
Greystones 5 NewBuildings Utd 0
Greystones 6 Convoy Arsenal 0 

After walking in the O’Neills Foyle Cup parade from Ulster University through the streets of the walled city, the girls took some time out to just enjoy the wonderful atmosphere the tournament brings to the town, which saw 10,000 participants compete in over 5 days of soccer.  

After some sightseeing, shopping and a picnic, it was back to business and they finished second day of matches with another two wins, beating locals Sion Swifts and Limavady Girls. 

Yesterday, it was finals day. After overcoming a stiff quarter-final competition, the girls wouldn’t let anything stop them as they faced Ballymoney in the final.

With incredible teamwork, skill and unwavering spirit, Greystones emerged the champions.
