Vartry Water Treatment Plant

Irish Water, working with Dublin City Council, Wicklow County Council and Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council, has successfully completed repairs following a mechanical issue at Vartry Water Treatment Plant and water is beginning to return to customers. 

Due to the size and scale of the supply network, full supply may not return to all impacted customers until the early hours of tomorrow morning, especially those on higher ground or extremities of the network, as reservoir levels recover and water refills the network.

Customers may also experience some temporary water discolouration following the works and occasionally issues such as internal airlocks may arise. For advice on clearing discoloration and airlocks, visit here.

John O’Donoghue, Irish Water, commented: “I would like to thank our colleagues in Irish Water, Dublin, Wicklow, and Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Councils who worked hard to complete the repairs and keep disruptions to a minimum. Crews made every effort to maintain water supply to as many areas as possible by reconfiguring the water network where possible and preventing further outages for thousands of customers.

“We would like to reassure all customers supplied by Vartry Water Treatment Plant that there are no issues relating to water quality as a result of the mechanical issue and the water is safe to drink. Some customers, however, may experience temporary discoloration of their water, or their water to appear brown or orange in colour due to dislodged sediment from the pipes as a result of network reconfiguration and changes in flow, pressure and direction.

“This is not harmful to health, however, we would advise customers not to drink the water until normal water supply has been restored.
