Return Of The Philanthropic Daughter

We’re big fans of the great Rachel Casey, the young Greystones girl who has managed to do an incredible amount of good for others.

And we don’t just mean her latest venture, collecting hundreds of toys and grooming kits for kids at Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

We’re talking about her volunteer work with Greystones Cancer Support and the Bray Lakers, her role as the Sugarloaf Lions Club’s Youth Ambassador, and giving advice to young Simon Harris on how to run Ireland’s health department.

It would appear that there’s nothing this 17-year-old Greystones girl can’t – and won’t – do for others. Heck, even RTE were impressed.

Today was a particularly special day though, as Rachel and her family returned to the hospital that saved her life, having battled with leukemia as a child.

It was clearly an emotional day, as Rachel explains…

I would just like to say how amazing today has been for my Mum and I.

I was nervous to go back after all I have been through in that hospital. I got to see all my favourite nurses though, and it was truly amazing. They showed me the amazing improvements done to Saint Johns Ward.

I know all the toys and grooming kits will be put to great use in Crumlin. When I left that hospital in 2011, my consultant asked me to come back when I was 18, and tell him what I have done with my life so far. I will be 18 in 2 weeks, and honestly, it’s the best birthday present to be able to give something back to a hospital who gave me my life back.

The entire team in Crumlin are filled with kindness. Miracles happen in Crumlin everyday. I will continue to support this hospital for the rest of my life. Hopefully I will be able to go back to this hospital again as a nurse one day.
