College principal Ruairi Farrell was presented with the prestigious Teachers Inspired Ireland Desmond Award.
An Ireland-wide initiative by DCU, the award seeks to celebrate teachers and recognise the transformative roles they play in our lives and in our communities.
Farrell was nominated by past GCC pupil Ciara Nolan, who had been struggling with an eating disorder during her time at the school. Her principal took action and made an appointment for the then 17-year-old Ciara to see a counsellor and get the help she needed.
Said Ciara, “Mr. Farrell would always pull you aside if he thought you were having a bad day, and really took the time to sit and listen to anything you had to say.” With his help and support Ciara said that Mr. Farrell saved her both mentally and physically.
Mr Farrell was awarded alongside three other teachers from across Ireland – retired Banagher principal Joe McAndrew, Graiguecullen’s Jennifer Hutton and Rathcoole’s Gemma Maher – whilst Friday’s ceremony was hosted by RTÉ broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan.
