Greystones Rugby Club is set to expand their club grounds by .32 hectacres.

Cllr Stephen Stokes expressed delight at being able to support the land transfer at the December 2023 meeting of Wicklow County Council. The land is a triangle of land that is currently not in use, and sits adjacent to the Charlesland Dual Carriageway.

The price for the transfer is set at €25,000. Greystones Rugby Club plans to transform a 3/4 pitch into a full size one, to cater for the growth in women’s and girls rugby.

Cllr Stephen Stokes believes that this will make a positive impact in the community. “Greystones Rugby Club is one of the clubs that are the bedrock of the community. They do amazing work, and engage people of all backgrounds. The growth of women’s rugby is another exciting chapter for Greystones Rugby Club.

“With the continued population growth in the area, this extra land for the club is definitely needed.”

Greystones Rugby Club was founded on Friday, October 15th, 1937 in the Carnegie Library, Greystones. The rent for the land use in the 1937-38 season was initially £6, however after negotiation it was reduced to £4. The first taste of success came in 1944 when the Greystones Rugby Club won the Metropolitan League. Multiple Irish International players have lined out for the club. Today Greystones Rugby Club caters for 600 youth players from ages 6-18 every week.

Cllr Stephen Stokes has congratulated Greystones Rugby Club on its continued success. Cllr Stokes added: “I saw the great work of the club first hand as youth player. The dedication of the coaches was superb, and made a lasting impression on me.

“However – and I know this will be a highly controversial opinion – I believe all of the volunteers and staff are critical to the success of Greystones Rugby Club.

“Like other clubs in the area, there is a real togetherness across the board. My grandfather, George Stokes, was a friend of Dr. Hickey, and helped to get the first floodlights for the club. So it is a great personal honour to assist Greystones Rugby Club.

“I would like to wish Greystones Rugby Club many more years of success and positive development.”
