Scouts’ Big Paddy’s Day Breakfast

or many a true Irishman (agus woman), there’s no better way to start your diddley-aye day than with a Scout’s Paddy’s Day Breakfast.

There’s just something about a dirty big fry-up that simply soothes a troubled, hungover Fenian soul.

Once it comes with a heavy splattering of John Hinde’s Half-Baked Has-Beens, of course.

Our diary of swinging by this Greystones institution in 2017 got lost in a site-rebuild, so, six years later, we’re having to work from our hazy GG memory. Firstly, there were llamas outside, and a double-rainbow hitting the Scouts’ Hall rooftop, twice, whilst Hozier and Bono busked on the steps.

Both rockers being kindhearted souls who recognise the beauty of this fine, philanthropic, fart-inducing fry-up.

Once inside, there was a juggler to the right, a dog playing the piano to the left, and Mrs Mooney doing cartwheels over by the kitchens.

There was also some mad poet from Charlesland crying, because he couldn’t think of a rhyme for sausages.

All in all, a beautiful experience. And one you can enjoy every Paddy’s Day morning down at the Scout’s Hall on Trafalgar Road. Opposite those top-of-the-range townhouses formerly known as The La Touche Hotel.

These big hearty breakfasts are normally served from 9.30am to 1.30pm, and it’s €10 for one, or €30 for a family. Unless you’re The O’Waltons. Only this year, given that the parade kicks off at 11am, it’s grab agus go breakfasts outside this year. It’s 2 sausage rolls for €3.50; 2 rashers for €3.50; a dirty big breakfast rolls for €5. Each year, the money raised goes to the Venturers activity programme whilst the raffle is for Greystones Cancer Support – so, it’s a win-win, early din-dins situation.
