Spanish Languages Scholar Tragically Struck By Car

t was late on Saturday night when a car struck Spanish philologist Belen Arana on the N11 in Loughlinstown.

Medical services pronounced the 23-year-old dead at the scene.

Belen has been living in Greystones, where she organises summer camps for youngsters from her hometown of Trebujena in south-west Spain.

The town has now declared three days of mourning, when the flags at the municipal buildings will fly at half mast.

Trebujena Council chiefs said, “From the Town Council, we extend our deepest condolences to Belen’s family and friends. May she rest in peace.”

The town hall also issued a statement. “In the name of all the residents of our town, we send our strength and encouragement to Belen’s loved ones at this difficult moment in time.”

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the incident, especially road users who may have camera footage at that location around 11.50pm on Saturday, May 16th.
