Stokes Goes Head-To-Head With Go Ahead

The invitation follows a successful motion by Cllr Stephen Stokes, who submitted it at the July 2023 meeting. Cllr Stokes stated: “There are big issues with the 184 service. Since Go Ahead took over the route, the 184 service has been plagued with problems over the years, such as skipping Charlesland. These issues need an immediate resolution.”

Cllr Stephen Stokes is concerned about the level of accountability at Go Ahead. He is calling for accountability, and has highlighted the plight of Charlesland commuters who are frequently skipped. Cllr Stokes added: “The worst that seems to happen to Go Ahead is that the NTA slaps them with a fine. That is not much use to people who are left stranded by buses that do not show up, or could not be bothered to serve Charlesland.

“The 184 service seemed to improve for a time, but recent reports have indicated that it is going backwards again. Local residents have advised me that they have missed appointments, interviews, travel connections and more. I want Go Ahead to explain these 184 issues, and tell us what they are doing to fix the problems. Additionally most complaints seem to go unanswered. There needs to be a greater level of transparency.”

Cllr Stephen Stokes is a commuter and uses the 184. He continued: “In fairness to Go Ahead, when the 184 runs correctly it is a good service. I would like to thank all of those who work as bus and train drivers. The majority are doing a great job. We just need to ensure a consistent level of service for the 184. There needs to be decisive action on stopping Charlesland from being skipped. I would also like to see the 184 route extended to include Glenheron and Hawkins Wood.”

Cllr Stephen Stokes wants Go Ahead Senior Management to attend the meeting to hear first-hand how these issues are affecting local commuters. Cllr Stokes concluded: “We would warmly welcome Go Ahead to meet with the Greystones Municipal District. I would just caution them about travelling on the 184 to attend.

“They might find that it’s a bit unreliable, and we don’t want them to miss the meeting.”
