Strong Currents Create A Close Call At The Cove

he ridiculously good weather we’ve been having of late has meant that just about everyone and her brother has been flocking to the seafront these days.

And as much as The North Beach and The South Beach both have their charms, for many, the bestest ever swimming hole around here is the quirky hideaway that is The Cove.

As any experienced swimmer will tell you though, when it comes to the sea, nowhere is entirely safe. Especially if the conditions in the water suddenly turn against you, with one such case occurring in Greystones this afternoon.

Around 2.15pm at The Cove, strong currents saw four young swimmers get into trouble, and first two girls were rescued by Kate Bowen Evans, who was strong enough to handle the increasingly dangerous waves.

Joining in the rescue soon after for another two girls were Daire Devine and Eoghan O’Longhaigh, and then David Rooney, helping to pull the girls to safety.

Thankfully, no one was harmed, but the close shave was a strong reminder that when you’re playing in the water, the number one rule is, play safe.
