Turns out the bould Sue was a major part of the Irish squad over the years, initially as an outfield player and then as a starting goalkeeper.
Originally from Grattan Park, Hayden made her debut for Ireland in 1985, against England, before going on to feature in over 30 senior games.
Playing for Rathfarnham United during the summer months and Greystones during the winter, Hayden would become the Irish team’s main goal – and heart – stopper during the 1990s, becoming a mentor of sorts for her eventual successor, Emma Byrne – who referred to Hayden in a 2008 interview as “my hero”.
