Back then, it was just a bunch of friends coming together to play a sport that was over 200 years old.

Having started out in 18th century England, by the late 19th century, baseball was deemed the national sport of America.

Despite the fact that the average game there takes six and a half days.

Still, 100 years later baseball arrived in Greystones, the first – and currently largest – baseball club in Ireland.

It’s unlikely any of those present on that fateful first day in Burnaby Park could have guessed that, 26 years later, the team would be celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Mainly because, we reckon, those original players could count.

Still, with everyone from the famous Flynn twins to the nobody Woods O’Rourke twins passing through the Mariners’ ranks, ringleader Gareth Donnelly assured GG this sunny Friday afternoon that, hey, the numbers do actually add up. Kind of…
