Temple Carrig Get The Horrors

Having sold out their production of Rat Trap last year in record time, the Temple Carrig TY Theatre Club did it again with their latest offering.

Hitting the stage on March 10th and 11th, their own particular TY twist on the 1986 hit musical The Little Shop Of Horrors sold out in just three days.

Which is understandable, of course, given just how much fun these productions are. And besides, there’s close to one hundred students up on stage for The Little Shop Of Horrors – and each one of them should have at least one person who loves them enough to actually go see them sing and dance, and jump, and scream, and generally get very, very silly indeed.

More importantly though, these TY  Theatre Productions are pretty darn incredible – as these photos by Susan Kyne prove. What’s killing GG -who, ahem, had a little cameo portrayal in the second half – is that we were due to swing up for Thursday 12th, but then, suddenly, the whole world shut down to try and stop the spread of COVID-19. And the Thursday show was no more.

Still, great to see this head-twisting rib-tickler hit Greystones, the TY kids once again telling the tale of apparent loser Seymour, and how he falls under the spell of a blood-sucking plant who promises him fame and, more importantly, the flower shop co-worker of his dreams, Audrey.

“In a world consumed by illusions created by social media, and for a generation obsessed with the attainment of fame and fortune, whatever the cost,” says TY theatre director Eoghan Cleary, “the easy metaphor of the plant for the insatiable appetite of social media was always going to be an easy one to make.

“This show is as relevant then as it is now for the current generation of young people growing up in Greystones.”

Yep, you should never, ever make major life decisions whilst under the influence of any kind of plant. Especially one that can talk, man.

Congrats to Eoghan, and all the cast, and crew, on what looked like another damned impressive production. How the heck they found someone handsome, windswept and jetsetting enough to play GG, well, we’ll just never know…
