The Day It All Began…

t seems like a lifetime ago now that Greystones harbour looked as it did above…

Guide reader Michael Keogh sent us this photograph, taken on January 28th, 2008 – the very first day, he reckons, that work began on transforming Greystones’ old Victorian harbour into the shiny, bright metropolis that it is today.

Michael is 99% sure it was the very first day – if you know otherwise, let us know.

If you look at the small track to the right that leads to the Cliff Walk as you head down past Joe Sweeney’s Chips Emporium, you’ll see hoarding being put in place opposite the old sailing club entrance.

There’s been a lot of water under the bridge, over the bridge, and just about everywhere else since then, but there’s no denying that the new marina is slowly taking shape.

And there’s no denying that our battered old harbour was a thing of beauty. Still, maybe the new harbour will be our yellow brick road…?
