aving just celebrated 10 years of Pretty Woman with Anne across the road, it was heartening to mark a decade of another Greystones business today.

Having moved to our main drag from the mean side streets of Dun Laoghaire back in 2017, Isobel is actually celebrating 10 years of Lorient Gift this weekend.

And that means, as always, lots of beautiful bargains on sweet, kooky, got-to-get-you-into-my-life home accessories and oddities.

It also means that Isobel is in a reflective mood.

“I’m not about to start writing poetry,” she says, “but ten years feels pretty significant. Especially considering I started out with a three-year lease in a small Dun Laoghaire spot that basically gave me an end date to either have made something of Lorient, or to go find some other dream to chase…”

Luckily, when those three years were up, Lorient was doing so well that Isobel decided a move to the main street was in order. And not just any main street…

“I had always thought Greystones would be the perfect place to have such a shop,” she smiles. “And so, as is so often the case, this spot on the main street came up just as I needed to make a move. It was meant to be…”

That any main street business that isn’t peddling coffee or haircuts has been hit hard in recent years – both by Covid and a cruel rise in energy costs, rates and beyond – means those still standing today clearly know what they’re doing. And they know what people want.

“I would be lying if I didn’t admit that it has been a rough few years,” nods Isobel, “but having been around a while before the slump hit meant that Lorient was strong enough to weather such storms.

“And it’s finally beginning to feel as though the sun’s coming up over the horizon again…”
