Cllr Stephen Stokes has welcomed the introduction of a new electric bike rental scheme in Greystones, which will see 100 state of the art e-bikes rolled out by leading mobility provider Moby.

The service will officially launch on Monday, May 26th. Cllr Stephen Stokes believes that this is a significant step toward more sustainable, active, and accessible transport in the town.

The new fleet of e-bikes will provide locals and visitors with a clean, convenient way to travel throughout Greystones and surrounding areas. The initiative supports Wicklow County Council’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions, alleviating traffic congestion, and promoting healthier lifestyles.

Speaking about the launch, Chairperson of the Transport, Infrastructure Delivery and Emergency Services, Strategic Policy Committee of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Stephen Stokes stated: “This is a fantastic development for Greystones. The introduction of Moby’s electric bike rental scheme gives our community a practical and environmentally friendly alternative to car travel. Whether you’re commuting, heading to the beach, or exploring our beautiful town, these bikes make it easier and more enjoyable to get around. There is further good news, as the bike rental scheme is also expected to be rolled out to Arklow, Wicklow Town and Blessington at a later date.”

The e-bikes will be available through Moby’s user-friendly app, which allows riders to locate, unlock, and pay for bikes quickly and securely. Several designated bike stations will be set up across key locations in Greystones to ensure easy access and smooth integration into daily travel patterns.

Cllr Stokes added: “Sustainable transport is a priority across County Wicklow. This launch in Greystones is just one part of our efforts to build a greener, healthier future for all. I encourage everyone to give the service a try when it goes live on May 26th.”

Moby is a leading shared mobility provider, has already implemented similar schemes in Dublin, Tullamore and Westmeath, with strong user uptake and environmental benefits. Greystones now joins this growing network, enhancing its reputation as a forward-thinking and environmentally conscious town.

The mobility scheme will launch with 100 shared e-bikes in Greystones which will commence full operation from May 26th, 2025. The e-bikes can be rented from and must be returned to public bike stands or virtual mandatory parking locations indicated in the app.

When fully launched across the county, customers will be able to rent an e-bike in one town such as Greystones and park it in another such as Wicklow Town making it a viable sustainable transport option for commuters, students, and tourists alike.
