he recent storms claimed quite a few beautiful old trees around here – Kilmacurragh losing over 100 in one night – but the young ‘uns proved themselves vulnerable too.

As witnessed down at the Greystones Plaza, where three proud and tall natives ended up at a 45 degree angle.

A halfway house position they’ve now been in for the past two months.

The danger being, of course, that if they don’t get a little help straightening back up, this trio might remain forever in this limbo position. Or, more likely, they will eventually fall flat on their fatsia.

“We were told back in December that they were going to fix these,” one of the plaza workers – who, hey, would rather remain nameless and blameless – told us, “but nothing happened.

“Then they said that the trees would be attended to in January. Each time, it was a different person who had the job of fixing the trees, and each time, nothing…”

We tried emailing Tom Byrne at SISK, but, no answer. So we tried the harbour master, Bernard Gallagher, to see if he might know who should be looking after the trees, but again, nada.

“Hopefully someone will get to them soon,” finished our new marina mate, “as these hungover trees will probably confuse the hell out of quit a few latenight visitors from the pub across the road…”
